"Naked Eye" by The Who

This time our chess-referencing song is a song by The Who, included in their album "Odds and Sods" in 1974. It was the 23rd and last track (but not least).
Pearl Jam performed this song sometimes in some concerts in the mid 1990s.

Artist: THE WHO
Song: NAKED EYE
Álbum: ODDS AND SODS

Take a little dope
And walk out in the air
The stars are all connected to the brain.
Find me a woman and lay down on the ground,
Her pleasure comes falling down like rain,
Get myself a car, I feel power as I fly,
Oh now I'm really in control,
It all looks fine to the naked eye,
But it don't really happen that way at all,
Don't happen that way at all.

You sign your own name and I sign mine,
They're both the same but we still get separate rooms,
You can cover up your guts but when you cover up your nuts,
You're admitting that there must be something wrong,
Press any button and milk and honey flows,
The world begins behind your neighbor's wall,
It all looks fine to the naked eye,
But it don't really happen that way at all,
Nah nah no, don't happen that way at all.

You hold the gun and I hold the wound,
And we stand looking in each other's eyes,
Both think we know what's right,
Both know we know what's wrong,
We tell ourselves so many many many lies,
We're not pawns in any game, we're not tools of bigger men,
There's only one who can really move us all,
It all looks fine to the naked eye,
But it don't really happen that way at all.

Once more, the word "pawn" seems to be the most suitable for chess references. ;-)

"Martyr" by Depeche Mode

Some weeks ago, I was listening to the radio and they started to play Depeche Mode's new unreleased song: "Martyr"

Then I took some time to analyze the lyrics of that song and found out there was a chess-reference in their song!

If I remember properly, this is the first chess reference made in a Depeche Mode's song since they started their successfull adventure in the techno music world, more than 25 years ago.

Let's go to lyrics:

DEPECHE MODE lyrics - "Martyr"

I've been a martyr for love
And I will die in the flames
As I draw my last breath
As I'm close in on death
I will call out your name

I've been a martyr for love
Nailed up on the cross
While you're having your fun
As the damage is done
I'm assessing the cost

I knew what I was letting myself in for
I knew that I could never even the score

I've been a martyr for love
I need to be by your side
I have knelt at your feet
I have felt you deceit
Could have leave if I tried

I've been a martyr for love
Tortured every hour
From the day I was born
I've been moved like a pawn
By the greatest of powers

I knew that I would have to suffer in vain
A way that I would never outgrow the pain

I've been a martyr for love
I've been a martyr for love
I've been a martyr for love

A nice way to start this new blog, without having to use any of the most popular and well-known chess references in music (which I will eventually include in this blog). ;-)
